and safety of his daughter. Who cannot relate to his love and devotion? Most people do love their children a great deal and if something were to happen to him,
that would be the worst thing that ever happened in their lives. In Nathaniel Hawthornes tale, the doctor actually renders his daughter poisonous to others.
The plot is interesting. Because Beatrices father is a doctor, he is able to use science for evil and make his daughter poisonous to others. She poisons
flowers as well. In some ways, the science used here is the work of science fiction, but it is nevertheless real in the story. That is, the author is able
to create a seemingly plausible tale by using the power of science. Of course, the doctors plan is unsuccessful. He never protected Beatrice.
Rather, it led to her demise. What happened is that a young man by the name of Giovanni Guasconti fell in love with her, despite the fact that she was
poisonous. He did not care and even tried to save her life by retrieving an antidote to the poison. It was to no avail. Her father explained that the antidote
would actually kill her, but she did not want to live being poisonous anyway. The fact that she was not able to have normal relationships, or a relationship with Giovanni,
because of her state was too much to bear. The irony is amplified when she drinks the antidote, much like the irony in Romeo and Juliet.
