the world guard dog in terms of intervening to correct basic humanitarian wrongs. This expectation is not that surprising given the degree we have been willing to intervene in
world affairs over much of our history as a nation. Many have argued in recent years, however, that the US has not been consistent in terms of the situations
in which it chooses to intervene and those that it chooses to remain relatively uninvolved. It has been contended that this differing level of involvement relates to the degree
the American public has been persuaded by various speakers, the media, and other elements in their life that intervention is necessitated. An example has been made, for example, between
the degree of change that occurred after the infamous Ida B. Wells speech condemning the once widespread lynching of African Americans in the US and that of the atrocities that
are currently occurring in other regions of the world. This paper emphasizes that while the power of persuasion of the masses is indeed important, there are many differences in
decisively intervening in our own domestic affairs and intervening in the international community. An emphasis is also made on the fact that this earlier time in history bears little
comparison to contemporary times in regard to what it takes to inspire individuals to action. Wells was in fact an individual with a
powerful persuasive ability. She was, after all, able to persuade Americans that the lynchings in the Deep South that were occurring in the early twentieth century were inherently wrong.
The speech inspired a movement, in fact, that was ultimately successful in ending such inhumane practices. The question that immediately arises when considering Wells success is if persuasion
