isolated in a world that is often incredibly complex. To have a lover or a spouse is not always the same thing, for friends are often quite different in their
function in relationship to ones soul. In the work of Rohinton Mistry friendships are incredibly deep and meaningful in the lives of his characters. The following paper examines the power
of friendship seen in two of his works. The works examined are his novel "A Fine Balance" and his short story "Collectors." Power of Friendship In the story
of "A Fine Balance" the friendship to be discussed is that which involves Maneck, one of the main characters in the story, and Avinash. Maneck is a young man who
has been essentially sent abroad to get an education and he appears to be in something of a culture shock, alone and struggling to succeed. It is at such
a time in a persons life when friendship proves priceless and precious, especially if that friend is someone who can relate, understands the same inherent values and cultural background. When
Maneck met Avinash he quickly felt a kinship towards him and was essentially nourished in that feeling. He believed that through his friendship with Avinash he would feel safe and
he would feel as though he were not so alone. As the story progresses, however, their time together dwindles. Maneck has come to rely, much like a needy partner in
a relationship, on the teachings of Avinash as it involved chess. That was their private time together, and that was the time that Maneck cherished. However, Avinash becomes more and
more involved in political issues, and has little or no time for Maneck. Maneck resents this greatly for this is the only true friend he possesses. Avinash seems to not
