the underperformance (Sarra, 2003). The issue can be seen from the beginning of the educational process; research by the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) revealed that from primary school age,
indigenous students would lag an average of two years behind their mainstream comparators (QSA, 2003). The results appear to reflect the national pattern (Klenowski, 2009). Numerous influences have been identified;
differing home conditions and cultural values have been assessed, as well as the apparent lower level of readiness of indigenous students prior to starting school, which may be interdependent factors
(Dockett et al, 2010; QSA, 2003). For those charged with educating indigenous students the issue becomes the identification of suitable educational models which may be used in order to
address the disparity; acknowledging the cultural differences and looking at ways of reducing the impact of the different influences on educational performance. One approach that may be advocated as suited
to a diverse population with the ability to meet different student needs is the Steiner approach to education, which is also referred to as the Waldorf model (Grindley and Hampson,
2008). To assess how and why this model may be appropriate some of the influences that may impact on student education and the way that the Steiner model addresses these
can be assessed. There are many influences on the way students perform; a key issue in many educational models is that of the students self perception and belief in
