fail to have an economic, social and environmental impact, a country with high structural unemployment, and many social needs there is potential for the preparations, as well as the exposure
gained by the country to present a potential for a large positive impact (Pellegrino et al, 2010; UNOSDP, 2010). In terms of economic impact it has been estimated that
the World Cup may be able to have a stimulating impact on the economy, creating both short and long-term jobs. It is estimated in the short term the event may
create an extra 150,000 jobs (Anonymous, 2008). Along with this it was also projected that the World Cup would increase the South African was national product by R 51.1 billion,
and generate R 7.2 billion in taxation revenues (Anonymous, 2007). There is also the potential for long-term benefits, with the exposure of the area to tourism markets, and the impact
in terms of the development of the infrastructure, to support tourism for the event, which will remain after the event (Horne and Manzenreiter, 2006). However, there is no certainty that
there will be positive impacts, Bohlmann and Van Heerden, (2008) points out that countries hosting mega sporting events in the past have often faced considerable financial losses, citing the Los
