During the economic boon that most of the Western world enjoyed following World War II, culture was less about archaic traditions that were passed down from one generation to
another but more a reflection of the ever-changing trends of the general public. Everything was being mass produced at breakneck speed, and the marketing of products became a powerful
sales tool as well as tangible works of art. It was these artworks that represented what was quickly dubbed as popular culture, montages of people and images that symbolized
a specific moment in time. Poster art, which had once upon a time received very little attention, was now celebrated as being cutting edge and its affordability enabled the
average consumer to be considered and art connoisseur. Two prolific painters whose posters illustrate the power and the aesthetic integrity of poster art are Peter Max and Jan Lenica.
Born in Berlin in 1937, Peter Maxs nomadic childhood profoundly influenced his artistic style. He spent the first ten years of his life in China, and then later joined
his globe-trotting parents on journeys to Africa and Israel, and after a stay in Europe during his teenage years left one vast territory remaining to this young vagabond - America
(Contemporary and Modern Art By Important Artists: Peter Max). The images Max had of America manifested themselves in the comic book fads that were popular during his adolescence,
