Cloning is a controversial issue to say the least. When one thinks of clones we tend to think of science fiction scenarios such as that depicted in "The Boys
of Brazil". The possibility of scientists creating a bunch of little Hitlers isnt that far removed from reality in todays world. Indeed, in 2002 scientists reported that they
had cloned the first human embryo (Cibelli, Lanza, West, and Ezzell, 2002). The popular perception of cloning, accomplished in this case using the process of nuclear transplantation, most often
entails the enticement of a cell to divide on its own for the purpose of creating a human embryo which can then be implanted in a womans uterus where it
would mature into a human baby. There are, however, a number of possible outcomes in human cloning. One, as was the case with the accomplishment by Cibelli, Lanza,
West, and Ezzell (2002), is creating a blastocyst for the purpose of harvesting stem cells that ultimately could be used in the treatment of patients with a variety of genetic
diseases. Other cloning pursuits seek to prevent children from inheriting serious disease as a result of faulty mitochondria (Lane, 2008). Switching around an embryos mitochondria might appear innocent
enough but we must realize that mitochondrial genes act well outside the mitochondrial boundaries. They can influence everthing from our energy level to our intelligence (Lane, 2008)! There
are obvious concerns over manipulating such things at will. Never-the-less, his type of research has conclusively demonstrated, in fact, that therapeutic cloning is well within our societal reach.
We must be aware that the societal impacts of such pursuits, however, are not exclusively positive. Human cloning has a number of implications
