a fair and livable wage and appropriate working conditions is one of the requirements for attracting and keeping qualified workers. In an attempt to insure that businesses do just
that laws have been established that establish the minimum wage on a federal level. These laws determine the minimum wage that workers can be paid, the maximum amount of
time on the job per day and per week, the conditions in which they can work. Interestingly, however, this law is sometimes overridden by state laws. There is
even a move afoot to wage the minimum wage on the federal level (Dresang, 2007). As might be expected, the topic of what constitutes an appropriate minimum wage is
a highly controversial one. One the one hand people must be paid enough to survive but on the other hand businesses must be able to acquire labor at a
price that allows them to sell their product for a price that is within the economic reach of customers.
Research Methodology The intent of this paper is to evaluate the problems relating to fair wage in the United
States. Research will be conducted by reviewing the current literature on the topic. Books and online databases will be explored for material relating to the minimum wage.
