Immersion programs are those that utilize a dual language, the native language of the student plus a target language. For example, a student in the United States or Canada who
speaks English fluently will have a target language of French or Spanish. Some programs in Canada have had schools where the students spoke either English or French predominately, and were
there to learn the other language. Such unique situations occur in nations where language is a rather hot political issue and there are many speakers of the target language. In
the United States, bilingual education is a political issue as well. Many Americans oppose using languages other than English as immigrants make their way into the United States. Those who
are already in the country and speak English object to the fluent use of other languages and there is a movement to make English the official country language. At the
same time, on the other hand, there is a movement to teach students in their native languages as some suggest this is how they will learn best. There was even
a controversy that went to teaching a form of English that was labeled Ebonics where it is presumed that the African American subculture had its own unique way of speaking
and that it should be embraced. Language in fact is important to those who have one that is unique to the dominant culture. In some ways, immigrants try to maintain
their unique heritages through the use of language. It is something that they can hold onto in a culture that is different from their native land. They want to pass
down a heritage to their children and grandchildren and there is nothing wrong with that. However, sometimes a refusal to learn the dominant language can get in the way of
