startling statistic. To others, this is not surprising at all. Whatever one feels about viewing habits, the truth is that watching TV is stigmatized, at least to an extent. People
are thought to be losers or that they have nothing else to do if they sit in front of the television. The medical establishment has blamed television for the epidemic
of obesity and so watching has been associated with laziness and overweight. An admission of watching a lot of television does lead to criticism that such a person is not
getting all there is to get out of life. Indeed, television is something that one does when there is nothing to do, and so one has to wonder if excess
television watching is truly positive or negative. Television is generally not applauded because it is construed as a passive activity. It is considered to be mindless and detrimental. Many
contemporary theorists look at television and shake their heads, as they see only a pastime that can be detrimental, creating such things as the "scary world syndrome" and otherwise being
a wasteland. There is the other side of the story which is that television is something that can be educational. Sesame Street and other shows have introduced a world of
learning to toddlers and the preschool set. There are educational shows for adults and news magazines, when not sensationalizing stories, that provide consumers with sound advice and important information. Television
also provides an inexpensive form of safe entertaining. There are both positive and negative aspects of television. Yet, in contemplating television as something other than what contemporary mans sees it
as, one can see that it is more than perhaps one has considered. After all, people are too close to it today. They wake up with Katie Couric and go
