Within the concept of police forces, there is police brutality and corruption, but then there are officers who save lives. They are who people call when things are terribly wrong
and the officers to some extent, fix things. The court system is also both positive and negative. The courts uphold the rights of people but because of the rigidity of
the law, it is sometimes the case that justice is not done. Finally, in the context of corrections, there are good and bad paradigms. There are problems as minorities
are disproportionately placed behind bars but then there are programs like restorative justice that do work. In each of these three areas of the criminal justice system there are
problems, but perhaps the biggest problems begin on the front lines. That is, the job that the police officers do are vital to the success of the overall system.
That is why corruption cannot be tolerated. Yet, there does seem to be a blue wall of silence still, and corruption continues to occur. The fact that the sons and
daughters of police officers carry a special badge so that they can be punished by their parents instead of the law is one protocol that needs to be changed. That
is tantamount to corruption. Of course, the things that occur routinely and are not extremely harmful are nowhere near the difficulties that come about in respect to the departments which
are entrenched in corrupt practices. The NYPD scandals during the 1960s and 1970s, which saw Frank Serpico at the center of things, brought to light how widespread corruption could
be. Serpico was a police officer during this period who would not go along with his peers. He would not tolerate corruption and in fact revealed a big scandal. He
