just into the external conditions and practices of a particular period of time, but also into the effect that these conditions tended to have upon the population at the time.
In other words, these accounts allow one to see both the social and humanistic and psychological components of the total historical picture. One such account which contains a great deal
of valuable insight into both the progressive and stifling nature of early American industrial society is Lucy Larcoms chronicle of her experiences as a child laborer in Massachusetts. After the
untimely death of her father, who had effectively been the sole provider for the family, Lucys family moved away from her childhood coastal home of Beverly to the comparatively industrial
Lowell. There, she entered into an arrangement by which she would labor at a local cotton mill in order to provide sustenance and financial support for her family. For many
readers, her account is shocking because of Larcoms young age, but she was hardly an exception: her experiences mirror the harsh reality faced by generations of children born into a
society fixated on the promise of wealth through industrial labor. On the other hand, however, Larcom often speaks well of her experiences, and suggests that they were somewhat socially liberating
