has received much criticism. Since Dr. Spock unleashed his ideas, parents during the late 1940s, 1950s and 1960s would follow a new direction, something that some say led to the
unruliness of a generation. Still, parents use spanking on occasion and this does seem to be a tried and true method. It has been reported that 94% of parents of
three and four year-olds still use corporal punishment (Straus & Stewart, 1999 as cited in Walsh, 2002, p.81). Rizzo (2002) remarks that while more than 90% of parents admit to
spanking their children, they really do not always understand the term. For most Americans, spanking is tantamount to taking a child, putting him over a knee, possibly pulling down
the childs pants, and hitting him, but not hard enough to seriously do damage. The spanking practice is supposed to deter negative behavior in the future. It is in fact
a method of negative reinforcement. In psychology, the use of both rewards and punishment is believed to alter behavior. When a parent wants to instill certain behavior in their children
they use such systems. The systems of course changes over time as the children become more autonomous. Before moving on, it pays to define spanking. What is it
exactly? How does one determine whether or not a spanking is an acceptable punishment or abuse? The American Academy of Pediatrics uses the following definition: "...striking a child with an
open hand on the buttocks or extremities with the intention of modifying behavior without causing physical injury" (as qtd. in Rizzo, 2002, p.88). Here, a spanking is similar to a
