to spanking children, and that it is a sound disciplinary tool when used correctly. Discussion It must be said at the outset that this position; i.e., spanking children is positive,
has very little support in the literature. Scanning quickly through over 100 journal and magazine articles has produced only two that offer some support for spanking as a positive means
of discipline. The paper will argue in favor of it, but be aware that this is a minority view. In addition, the most detailed of the pro-spanking sources is a
Christian website, suggesting that many parents who believe in spanking may perhaps base their support on the Biblical injunction that to spare the rod is to spoil the child.
There is also a fundamental "disconnect" between parents and psychologists, sociologists and other medical personnel with regard to the issue. The overwhelming majority of professionals say that it is never
appropriate to spank a child of any age, and at the same time over 61% of all American parents not only approve of it, but admit to using spanking as
a disciplinary measure (Springen, 2000). Clearly, spanking is a common practice and one which parents will not easily abandon, despite evidence that it is both ineffective and harmful. Still, parents
must have some sort of technique for disciplining unruly kids. These are the two sides in this argument; having presented the objections, well now look at those sources that suggest
spanking has some positive aspects. Perhaps the most persuasive argument in favor of spanking is that it is probably the quickest and best way to get a child to stop
