a symbolic story presented in a very real setting, a story that speaks of the violence people do without thought, representing the nature of humanity. It is a story that can be well explicated from many different perspectives because of its depth. With that in mind the following paper examines how Jackson portrays women in this particular story. Women in "The Lottery" In Jacksons story the reader is first presented with numerous men and the position of several men, prior to the arrival of women who are "housewives" (Kosenko 27). This is evident when the narrator explains how the women were "wearing faded house dresses and sweaters" (Jackson). They also obviously "came...after their menfolk. They greeted one another and exchanged bits of gossip as they went to join their husbands" (Jackson). At this point they then began to call their children to come join them. Clearly women are secondary to men and are the simplistic vision of housewives as they come "after" the men and they are in charge of the children. They are not well dressed and they obviously work a great deal as housewives. One critic notes that the "Power in the village.. is exclusively consolidated into the hands of male heads of families and households. Women are disenfranchised" (Kosenko 27). It is the men who are essentially in charge of things and it is only when there is no man present in the house that the important task of pulling paper is turned over to a woman.
