manifestations of Toms angst. The interactions between Tom and his mother, Amanda, and sister, Laura, are often painful to watch, and effective portrayal of Toms character integrates significant body
language. John Malcovitchs portrayal of Tom in the 1987 film version of the play directed by Paul Newman provides a distinct view of the role that body
language, gesturing, and the Toms disquieted nature. Malcovitch effectively depicts the conflicted Tom, often interacting with his mother and sister in a manner that underscores his inner conflict.
The central actions in the play revolve around Toms reaction to his family; the largest part of the film is set in the family home, and the focus of the
play is on just four characters: Tom, his mother Amanda, his sister Laura, and a male suitor who comes to the home (Jim). The
play, in a nutshell tells the story of a man who is hopelessly trapped between a feeling of responsibility to his family and who he knows/feels he may become.
Tom, then, is the central male figure in the family. Their father has abandoned them some many years before, and so it has fallen to Tom to become the
breadwinner for the family. Each family member is terribly dysfunctional and Tom decides rather early on that each of them would be better off without the other to feed,
fuel and nurture the dysfunction of their personalities. Tom Wingfield is a poet by nature, but a cog in a wheel at a local factory. Tom feels stifled because he
