gender struggle. They looked at hard core economics and class differentiation but rarely bothered to note that the man was sitting in the parlor with a cigar while the woman
was scrubbing the floor. In fact, the freed slave who had worked so hard to get to be considered even a human being was given the right to vote before
the females of America had. And women did play a large part in the creation of the nation as well as to have served in wars. Many underestimate their contributions
to society through the ages. Fast forward to the 1960s and 1970s and one sees a feminist movement revitalized. The suffrage movements of the late 1800s would not get
as far as the woman in society did during the twentieth century. Still, while she was recognized as a person as the decades went on, many writers of the
nineteenth century ignored that fact, which is the thesis of this paper. Many writers portrayed women as meek and helpless. Even if she tried to make it on her own,
she could not because she would be held back by her husband or father. Now, that was true to an extent and authors would want to bring such things to
light. But still, few heroes emerged from literature or non-fiction of that century to truly portray the strong women who did exist through the decades of the 1800s and who
actually made a difference for America and for the future of women all over the world. Karl Marx is an example of a great writer of the time period who
paid some attention to women, but most of his writing centered around other things. A compilation of his work--the Portable Marx--provides a good number of writings to evaluate. The book
