a very kind and hopeful fashion. For example, "E.T." and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" were both films that offered hope through the kind aliens. In these films we
find that the aliens provided positive reinforcement for looking into space and becoming more enlightened human beings. However, it may well be said that most science fiction films that focus
on aliens coming to earth are truly films that depict aliens as dangerous, threatening and all but evil. This was quite true in the past, when film was relatively new,
for all aliens seemed frightening and life threatening. But, even in recent times we are still given that inherent evil nature of aliens in films. The following paper examines two
films from different time periods and discusses their portrayal of aliens. The films examined are "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" from 1956 and "Independence Day" from 1996. The paper examines
them separately and then provides a comparison and contrast of the two. Invasion of the Body Snatchers Because "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" was made several decades ago
it is very easy to see many symbolic messages in the film as it relates to the aliens. With history at our hands we can readily see that this film
depicts the aliens as beings who represent communism and the fear of being consumed by such "thought." The aliens in this film are never really seen. We do not
know what the actual alien looks like and we never see a spaceship that indicates how they got to earth. The only evidence we have that there are aliens is
the pods. The pods grow replicas of the people within and then take the individuals place when the person is asleep. We do not know what happens to the body
