George Steiners "The Portage to San Cristobal of A.H." is a fictional tale of what might have been had Adolf Hitler survived World War II and squirreled himself
away in some remote corner of the world hiding from his pursuers. The book is highly controversial to say the least. In a nutshell, "The Portage to San
Cristobal of A.H." tells the tale of a team of Israelis that have devoted their lives to Hitlers capture. They make the miraculous discovery that Hitler has been hidden
away in an Amazon jungle ever since the culmination of the war. They capture him and begin the process of bringing him to justice. A problem immediately presents
itself, however, as to whose justice will Hitler be subjected? The world does not want to be reminded of Hitler and his atrocities! Despite that fact, "The Portage
to San Cristobal of A.H." and the events that unfold in it is a vivid reminder of just that. Although Steiners approach is
through a fictional venue, in reality he adds only small details that did not actually occur in the worlds relationship with Adolf Hitler. Hitler, of course, committed suicide near
the end of World War II. Steiner placing him in the Amazon several years after the culmination of the war, therefore, is the biggest fictional element of the book.
In reality much of the rest of Steiners book is grounded more in fact than in fiction. The most important function of Hitlers
book is its reminder of just how sinister Hitler and his ideology was. Hitler was responsible for the death of six million people and few other characters from history
