obnoxious, high-seated, plush cars with big tires, designed to go off road, but more likely sitting in the playground parking lot-and are called sport utility vehicles or SUVs. Laver (1997)
writes in MacLeans that the emergence of the sport utility vehicle is really just a trend. He claims they are bad on gas, and in reality do not venture off
road (1997). By definition, the sport utility vehicle is meant for off road and so Laver actually makes the point that they are status symbols and not really very practical
at all. In terms of authenticity, it is the same thing as when someone wears sunglasses inside. The author goes on to say that suburban parking lots are flooded with
them, everything from Jeep Grand Cherokees to Land Rovers, and that this fad is a gold mine for the auto industry (Laver, 1997). He cites statistics proving the popularity of
the SUV and explains that there seems to be no limit to the cost increases that buyers are willing to absorb (1997). Indeed, while it was fashionable to be sporting
a BMW or Mercedes at one time, it is now just as trendy to drive a rugged, off road vehicle to a party. Laver goes on to note that
the cost of the vehicles have skyrocketed, but in part that is due to new features that the new autos possess (Laver, 1997). Then the author asks how long the
