Store, , May 2010 properly! In 1983, many people in Nicaragua wanted and expected the
Pope to make some reference to the wars and brutalities that were happening and that had happened since the Sandinistas took power. Each side, the Sandinista government, and the people
believed that the Pope would make statements to support their respective sides. The Sandinistas were so certain thats what would happen, they had citizens across the country picked up by
the busload, about 800,000 people were transported to the two sites where the Pope held a Mass (Hoyt, 1983). The people expected the Popes visit would lessen tensions while supporting
the plight of the poor. Instead, his visit inflamed the people. Five priests held government offices in Nicaragua. This is very unusual. In fact, it was in 1983 that
the Vatican issued a new Code of Canon Law that forbids priests to hold public offices where they have civil power (Envoi Team, n.d.). These priests opposed the rise of
what they and the people called communism. The Pope made it very clear to the priests involved in the revolution that they would stop their activities. The Pope
was especially vocal about the priests holding a civil government office. They were told to leave those positions or leave the priesthood. He had chastised one of the Cardinals
who met him at his plane. When Father Roberto Cardenal bent to kiss the Popes ring, the Pope pulled his hand back and waggled two fingers at the Cardinal. The
