hungry child starve? There are numerous theories as to why some people are poor or homeless. Many theories blame the victim and instead of looking at the government, or the system, people suggest that individuals are lazy and that anyone can get a job and put food on the table. Yet, if that were the case, why are so many people struggling? Do they simply overextend themselves, not living within their means, or is minimum wage not sufficient to live a minimum lifestyle? Might the system be to blame after all? Karl Marx thought so. Marx saw the society as being divided by class. In fact, to Marx and his cohort Friedrich Engels, one could divide the society into the haves and the "have nots." The workers would be the latter as those who owned the businesses would reap the profits. Things are not much different in America today. A CEO can make millions of dollars per year, while a janitor on the bottom of the rung might make not much more than $5 dollars per hour in that same company. The disparity is what not only causes poverty, but a sense of alienation. Alienation is devastating and permeates the soul. Marx saw capitalism as the culprit in creating poverty as it divided the people. Many would think that those in the higher echelons of society would reach their hands out to the poor, as they are most deserving of help. Yet, there is also a chasm between the deserving, and the undeserving poor, in society. Unfortunately, American culture seems to embrace the idea that the rich should be worshipped and the poor are simply not deserving of such fanfare. Rather, the poor are discarded and ignored.
