A 9 page outline of the history of the civil rights movement which would come to be known as the Poor People’s Campaign, a campaign which originated in 1968 under the organization of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and Martin Luther King Jr. The organization stood on the premise of equality for all and is considered by many historians to be the “last effort of the 1960s mass mobilizations of nonviolent resistance”. Considered today to have been only minimally successful, the campaign marked important shifts in the thinking and organization of both the SCLC and Martin Luther King Jr. Although the premises of the Poor People’s Campaign was that it encompassed all people’s it has been stymied in its efforts to effect change in that it is largely associated by mainstream Americans as a solely black movement.
