are more prevalent than grassy areas and the groundwater supply is fading ("Chinas pollution," 2001). Smog is also a problem ("Chinas pollution," 2001). This is all caused in part by
the fact that China has done well in certain economic sectors. China has a thriving economy today, but it is at the expense of the environment. Seemingly, China has progressed
full throttle without stopping to consider the negative ramifications of growth. Becker (2004) remarks: "China may be getting richer as it turns into the workshop of the world, but as
Beijingers rich and poor admit, what good is money if you cant breathe the air? If the economy keeps roaring along, within three decades China could overtake the U.S. as
the worlds largest source of greenhouse gases, associated with global warming" (p.68). It is not as if China is doing nothing about the problem. It has invested in a $12
billion program that should span ten years to this end ("Chinas pollution," 2001). There have been a variety of programs implemented such as the switching from regular gas to unleaded
and recycling wastewater ("Chinas pollution," 2001). Other measures include the closing of polluted factories ("Chinas pollution," 2001). One can imagine that all of this cannot be good for Chinas economy.
After all, these measures are expensive and pollution costs nations a lot of money to either maintain or clean up. In other words, whether or not something is done about
the problem, pollution wreaks havoc on the economy. A great deal of Chinas waterways and rivers are polluted ("Chinas pollution," 2001). The following specific information is relayed: "A report
from the State Environmental Protection Administration suggested that only 57 per cent of river water in China met safety standards, and that groundwater supplies are also heavily polluted" ("Chinas pollution,"
