to get it back is certainly there. Because Social Security is perceived somewhat like a personal bank account, there are heated debates on those who want a sure thing, and
those who claim that keeping social security as is, is essentially cheating the people. It is like allowing the people to put their money in a mattress--or the bank at
todays low interest rates--versus investing that money for perhaps a ten digit return on investment. Of course, in recent years, as people lose their shirts in the market, the old
Social Security investment scheme does not seem so bad. The market goes up and down all the time, and sometimes people lose their money. Many people can weather the
storm, but when one is nearing retirement, or already retired, it is difficult to make the money back. Still, investing the Social Security money is something that should be
considered because in the long term, investment decisions should not be made lightly. At least, it is worth a look at the system and the alternatives that politicians bring.
First, a look at the history of Social Security and its design is appropriate. II. The Origins of Social Security While some type of social
