but they were also country specific. For instance, many movements were about things that were occurring largely in the United States. Issues of discrimination in the U.S., as well as the politics of Vietnam, loomed large over 1960s America. However, there was a general movement across the world. In the film Across the Universe, 1960s America is highlighted, but the producers seem to suggest that similar situations were occurring in other parts of the world. Interestingly, the 1960s did set the tone for what was to come. As the decades wore on, the world would become smaller and smaller. Obviously, globalization is something that has been with the world always. Even Christopher Columbus realized that trading in a different part of the world was worthwhile. Yet, it is only since the birth of the Internet, and the advances in communications and transportation, that a truly global society is a reality. While social movements are sometimes tied to specific nations and their governments, it is not out of the realm of possibility that social movements should or could be global. In fact, there are global social movements today. Many of the global social movements are political in nature. They may be about feeding the hungry, like the ONE campaign, but they involve issues like debt forgiveness for small, poor countries. The world is smaller today and people realize that no one for example has really helped Africa. There are people living in makeshift huts in the poorest parts of the world and that is unacceptable to those who live in developed countries.
