on the table in any election year. Most, of course, extend past the election year to affect the lives of every American if not on a daily basis at
least on a perpetual basis. One of these issues is stem cell research. The Democrats, for the most part, are on one side of the issue while the
Republicans are on the other. It is an issue that polarizes not just the political parties but Americans as a whole. On the one hand stem cell research
is viewed as a potential savior for most of humanities medical needs. On the other it is viewed as a moral and ethical morass. The mention of the
subject inevitably inspires a debate between the importance of utilitarianism and the sacredness of human life. Until just recently the debate
surrounding stem cells was cemented by the fact that the most valuable of the stem cells were associated with human fetuses. Because these types of stem cells must be
collected at specific stages of development, they had to be obtained from aborted fetuses. As might be expected, the use of fetal stem cells raises the ethical problems surrounding
abortion. This presented a scenario where politicians found themselves polarized on one side of the issues or the other. Republicans took a stand against the use of cells
harvested from aborted fetuses and the situation escalated until President Bush officially placed a moratorium on the practice leaving only so many already-harvested fetal stem cells open for use in
research. The Democrats, heralding the potential benefits of the research, lobbied for continued stem cell research. Researchers found themselves in a precarious situation balancing ethical concerns and scientific
