The name Great was attached to her name out of respect for Russias massive territorial expansion that took place during her incredible reign, which included the annexation of a
large Poland (Blumberg, 1995). She was also the founder of what would become a fabled navy, and at the time of her death in 1796, the Russian flag proudly
"flew in Europe, Asia, and in Alaskan North America" (Blumberg, 1995, p. 27). It was a life Sophia Augusta Fredericka could have hardly imagined as a child in Stettin,
Prussia, the daughter of a prince and princess who had little more than titles and not much else (Blumberg, 1995). As a young girl, Sophia was little more than
a pawn in her ambitious mothers social climbing game, becoming betrothed to Russias Grand Duke Karl Peter Ulrich of Holstein (grandson of tsar Peter the Great) at the tender age
of 15 (Blumberg, 1995). But Empress Catherine found the game of politics far more to her liking, and when her unsatisfactory marriage to her boorish and intellectually inferior husband
left much to be desired, she began to educate herself on the matters of state. The political world Catherine II was plunged into began and ended with the Russian court.
She did not ascend to power overnight; she had eighteen years to observe how the business of government and politics was conducted by those in power; she also paid
close attention to "the many pitfalls of the Russian court" (de Madariaga, 2001, p. 45). Most importantly, however, were the many books she read by the leading political philosophers
