For example, there are lobbyists who buy steak dinners and shower politicians with gifts, to effect certain legislation. During the latter part of the 1960s, Theodore Lowi dubbed the advent of political interest groups "interest group liberalism" (Weisberg, 2005). First, it is important to define the term. What is an interest group exactly? The following definition appears on Wikipedia: " An interest group (also called an advocacy group, lobbying group, pressure group or special interest) is a group, however loosely or tightly organized, doing advocacy: those determined to encourage or prevent changes in public policy without trying to be elected" ("Interest Group," 2006). The interest group has a particular agenda and rather than work through ordinary politics as individuals, such as running for office, these groups try to alter public policy. One example of this is an organization called Act Up. This is the well known group formed to try to raise money for research for AIDS. Act Up stands for a cause that few would be opposed to, as they actually want policy changed to help people who are dying from a disease. Of course, it is political, because AIDS is controversial. There is much misinformation about the disease and many people associate it with homosexuality and IV drug use. Of course, while it is true that homosexual practices invite AIDS, as do dirty needles, the disease is widespread and affects everyone. That is, anyone who has sex can acquire the disease. ACT UP is an acronym which stands for Aids Coalition to Unleash Power. It is an organization that begin in the mid-1980s when AIDS was a relatively new concept.
