In the chapter The Political Economy of Ersatz Capitalism in South East Asia this is considered in more detail. There is diversity in the culture of the different nations,
the area generally has open economies, due to the geographical location between China and India and the West. The NECs are different to the NICs3 as they are all culturally,
ethnically and the religions are internally diverse as well as there being diversity in terms of colonial heritage The Chinese problem was the
result of a large migration of Chinese to South East Asia at the end of the nineteenth century as they wanted to take advantage of employment opportunities elsewhere and moved
as a result of push and pull factors including colonization that had taken place. The jobs that were taken on by the Chinese migrants lead to racial stereotyping with the
Chinese often gaining the middle management positions and leaving many of the local population in the more menial jobs. In the NICs
there was not a major disruption in the post colonial or post monarchical periods, anti Chinese feeling were overcome with policies that sought to encourage local entrepreneurship, often to the
detriment of Chinese businesses. The result was the Chinese seeking to defend their positions developing links with powerful individuals in the civil or military organizations, this saw the development
of renter capitalism in the area. However, after riots and a period of unrest indigenous, people, such as in Malaya gave preferential treatment for land ownership, education and government jobs,
