trouble. The teenager will fear them as they are stopped in their automobiles for seemingly minor transgressions. Criminals will avoid them. Media sometimes adores them, but at other times tears
them down. But one thing is true. Police officers play different roles in their positions as officers of the law. Sometimes they do act as counselors and psychologists as they
talk someone down from a bridge who is about to commit suicide. Sometimes, they are knights in shining amour as they find a missing child who merely fell asleep in
the backyard or rescues a kitten from a tree. At other times, they are vigorously fighting crime and risking their lives. They are pit against the likes of drug dealers
and hit men who have no scruples about killing. Even when off the clock, the officer is required to act and react in dangerous situations when civilians would just be
able to run away. There is never a time when the officer is truly off duty. This fact prompts a larger than life persona of the officer. In several articles
on a police web site, the fact that two auxiliary officers died in a Greenwich Village shootout is duly noted ("NYPD honor slain colleagues," 2007). These members of the auxiliary
wear no guns or bullet proof vests. They were gunned down as they tried to help in an out of control situation. While atypical, this situation provides a true characterization
of the risk that police officers take every day. It seems that in general, the crime fighter role is the one most ascribed to officers. The media perhaps plays up
blunders in this area in order to make the department look bad, and sell newspapers, but bad behavior is not typical. What is the actual role of crime fighter? The
