to do with real life anyway? Recently, a poet laureate from New Jersey was criticized for an unpopular political stance. Yet, aside from poets who make headlines, poets and their poems get little attention. Books of poetry sell, but they do not sell as well as novels or nonfiction works that people feel are more substantial. While the poets work is often discounted in favor of life, or media, or even Hallmark, one has to wonder what, if anything, the poet has to offer. The role of the poet is a common theme of poets as they try to make sense of what they do. Poets are born, not made, and they have a particular gift or talent that they are compelled to share with the world. Davis notes: "In Stegers view, many writers of this generation feel free from the earlier necessity to create and further Slovene identity and ideology and from the role of the poet as seer" (59). While many would not call a poet a seer, the idea should be contemplated along with the idea that the poet does see life differently form the majority. This is true of many writers and artists who are able to express themselves in ways that the majority could not. The poets role in part appears to be to get one to think outside of the box. Again, many poets have broached this intriguing subject, and some of these who have made a compelling point about the poets role are William Butler Yeats, Wallace Stevens and William Carlos Williams. Williams in fact dedicated a volume of work to just that point, which he calls Paterson.
