war, and the largest war modern man had ever witnessed. Like any war there were elements of pain and suffering that went beyond the average individuals comprehension. Wilfred Owen and
Isaac Rosenberg were two poets who attempted to perhaps make sense of the war, and record elements of warfare that would perhaps offer insight for the average individual. In the
following paper we examine some of the war poetry of Owen and Rosenberg illustrating how these poems utilize techniques that unite poets of this type into a movement in poetry
concerning WWI. Wilfred Owen The poems of Wilfred Owen are incredibly tense and incredibly vivid. They assault the reader, working to get a message across. That message is
essentially the truth in that war is not something to be heralded as a heroic deed, but a reality that is often too horrible and destructive, to body and soul,
than any could imagine. In the first poem to be examined, "Anthem for Doomed Youth," the poem begins with the following lines, offering us a powerful sense of futility: "What
passing-bells for these who die as cattle? / Only the monstrous anger of the guns./ Only the stuttering rifles rapid rattle/ Can patter out their hasty orisons" (Owen 1-4). The
poem continues and discusses how life was once perhaps simple for these soldiers, but all innocence is past: "Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,/ And each slow dusk a
drawing-down of blinds" (Owen 13-14). Throughout this short and seemingly simple poem we see how so much of war is futile and that there is no real honor is war.
