and of mind in respect to a particular period of time, and they also reflect the personal choices and ideologies of authors. Clearly, throughout time individual authors have unique experiences
and ideas, but still, there is a sense of when an author comes from the pre-modern or postmodern or Victorian era for example. Each era is replete with stylistic and
content peculiarities and for instance, the poetry of Matthew Arnold prominently reflects the Victorian milieu. For Arnold, or at least in the way that critics characterize him, there is really
no answer to lifes eternal questions. Religion is at the crux of all his poetry and yet he aligns the majesty of the seas with his own inquiries into mans
wondrous inquisition. Although Arnolds poetry does not resolve the big questions that are asked by man, nor in respect to the questions that philosophers wrestle with, he does in fact
provide fodder for critics in many of his poems. Interestingly, and ironically, Arnold literally becomes a literary critic himself. Still, his own work stands on its own as the writings
are certainly competent and representative of not only the Victorian era stylistically, but more appropriately in its content and use of metaphor and symbolism. As Arnold embraces God along with
the seas that the maker has created, he questions things. The church is often the center of his works, but not the end all and be all of creations mark.
Rather, this author probes deeply into the heart of man but leaves a rather superfluous notion. One might want to delve deeply into this poets work for insights into what
is reasonable to question and what is simply included for decoration. In terms of style, this author does not stray far from the norm, and while his ideas are
