and may compete with the level of exaltation felt in poetry of religious ardor. On the other hand, poetry can represent the injustices that exist within the world, the
reactions to these injustices and, on occasion, provide insight into the solution for the problem presented. Derek Walcott in the poems, A Far Cry From Africa and Midsummer,
provides a look into the theme of injustice based on race or racism. The first poem (written in 1962) is written from a personal, emotional perspective while the second
poem, Midsummer, shows a maturity in the writers style as well as focusing on the experiences of the narrator/writer to provide the information concerning an external event in the life
of the poet. Walcotts earlier work is immature, showing an anger that has been personalized rather than directed to the outside world in general. The tone of
the poem is anger. The theme is injustice within the context of colonial rule. A Far Cry From Africa is also a far cry from a well structured
poem. The rhyming pattern is alternately free form and occasional standard abab. It follows the pattern of iambic pentameter of five stresses per line alternating with rests.
This is a form made popular by Shakespeare and is thought to be the closest of the established patterns to verbal speech. Traditional poetry, such as that written
