than anything else, what distinguishes Othello from this authors other darker works is the role of its villain, Iago. While the usurper King Claudius (Hamlet), the faithless daughters (King Lear),
and the unnatural villains in Macbeth are all impressively sinister in their way, not one enjoys the same diabolical role as Iago. This is a character who essentially
writes the plays main plot - assuring himself a key part in it, and gives first-hand, self-destruct lessons to the others -- most notably to the noble Moor, Othello
(Shakespeare, 1994). In essence, the play presents us with two remarkable characters - dominant force Iago and his hapless victim --
all interwoven in the abysmal cloak of tragedy. Through just the right blend of innuendo, smoke and mirrors pseudo-loyalty, and poker-faced deceit, Iago is able to persuade Othello to see
duplicitous infidelity where once there was only his beautiful young wife, Desdemona, and Cassio, his favorite lieutenant. Indeed, not only is seeing and the gap between appearances/ reality a
central theme of the play, but it overlaps with other major thematic strands (trust, honor and reputation). In addition, it sheds light on still others -- including the theme
of patriarchy and the political state (Shakespeare, 1994 and See Also Lambs Tales from Shakespeare - Othello, 2001). This essay will examine this renowned Shakespearean tragedy with respect
