This is because none of Emily Dickinsons poems were published in her lifetime, nor did she wish them to be perhaps because it was to her akin to bearing her soul for the world to see. It was only after her death in 1886 when her sister Lavinia discovered a collection of more than 1,700 poems that Emily Dickinsons gentle artistry and powerful prose found its way into the popular mainstream, where it remains today. To say that American poetry has never been the same since is a gross understatement. Emily Dickinson thought constantly about the human condition, the issues of life and death that shape it, and often considered the nature of humanity, specifically mans (and womans) place in the cosmos. The poems of Emily Dickinson are studies in deep philosophical and spiritual contemplation. The conflicts are reflective of life in terms of being corporeal/spiritual, good/evil, and life/death (Engle 72; Vendler 34). Dickinson delights in delivering her poetic messages usually through natural metaphors that enable her to probe her own personal conflicts "as a woman and as a poet" (Barker 3). She manipulates thought patterns through her mastery of poetic structure, such as through her repetitive use of double dashes during the middle or at the ends of lines, which force readers to pause in contemplation. These dashes, the capitalization of words in the middle of sentences, and the lack of closing punctuation interrupt the action temporarily in the same way as unforeseen events can disturb an orderly routine.
