have not had the wherewithal to obtain permanent shelter. The number of homeless are hard to pin down. Various surveys have indicated that homelessness ranges from 1% to more than
7% of the United States population (Tompsett, Toro, Guzicki, Manrique and Zatakia 47). The homeless are not a homogenous bunch. Sometimes, they even have jobs, and families, but simply cannot
afford to pay the high rents in most cities. Yet, there is a sense that homelessness has received a bit more attention in recent times. While different in terms of
how the homeless are perceived, it does appear that the reasons for homelessness also mirror contemporary culture. That is, there are now new family paradigms. The traditional nuclear family is
not typical. In most cases, both husband and wife work when such models exist. There are many homeless families today, which in part is attached to the idea that the
two-wage earner couple is no longer a prevalent model due to divorce, unemployment, and the high cost of childcare. It is sometimes difficult to find a single cause of
homelessness. It is a phenomenon with multiple causes and like many social problems, there are a cluster of problems that seem to be found at the same time. A study
from Canada finds that prolonged homelessness, along with a lack of state support, can lead to criminal activity (Baron 399). It is not that the cause of crime is directly
related to homelessness, but social scientists see it as one factor that does contribute to criminal activity. Also, addiction is something that does sometimes leads to homelessness or is found
