in fact their mothers have used the substance. Once born, these babies need tender loving care as well as medical attention for their inevitable distress. They are after all born
using, and possibly addicted, to a substance. It is true that some women stop using heroin midstream and begin to use Methadone instead but even when enrolling in such a
program, the baby is likely to be born small, weak and ill. Heroin babies are worse off than many and it is much more dangerous to use heroin during pregnancy
than most any other substance. At the same time, it is important for a mother not to abruptly stop heroin use while the baby is still in the womb as
the baby may go through withdrawal alone. Once born, at least the baby can get help. Drug use during pregnancy has become a moral issue, but it is also a
medical one. Some do not want to interject morality when it comes to drug abuse because the important thing is to get the user off of the drug. At the
same time, heroin use while pregnant creates havoc on a new life. A baby, who never asked to be born, comes into the world suffering. A recent law was
signed by President Bush that rendered the fetus an independent human being and was something prompted by the Laci Peterson case where her fetus who was to be named Connor
died also. When Laci Petersons body was discovered along with the expelled fetus also in the waters, members of a womens organization claimed that the fetus was not
