simply seeing Native Americans as also oppressed, the colonists served as the oppressors. Then, the colonists would import slaves-a practice that was done long before the colonists arrived in North
America-and brought Africans in chains and shackles to the New World. A student asks: Were African Americans colonists or did they migrate to the United States? In fact, they were
neither colonists or willing immigratns. They were brought to the United States aginst their will. The colonies were already established and they were simply used as chattel. Did African Americans
face prejudice as a group? Was there segregation or racism? If so, why? Clearly, the African Americans did face prejudice and they still do today. They were also segregated
a great deal throughout the United States, but particularly in the rural South where slavery was most prevalent during the early years and where Confederate flags still fly. Racism is
prevalent today, but it is not found mostly in the South. Rather, it seems, prejudice and racism exists a great deal in the urban areas. Bernasconi (2001) explains the following:
"If we carefully consider what race prejudice really is, we find it, historically, to be nothing but the friction between different groups of people..." (p.88). It is an idea that
makes sense. There are differences of opinion between people and a hatred festers. Similar to how families are constructed, there are often groups within families that do not like each
other and do not get along. Sometimes the bad feelings are attached to some early incident. The dislike continues over the years and more and more evidence as to why
there is hatred manifests. Everything the group does is perceived in a negative light. This happens across cultures, races, within families and within groups of friends in high schools. Prejudice
