It is felt that placebos work in part by reducing the distress caused by illness, which is why placebo therapy is more effective in certain illnesses such as depression
and anxiety. Sometimes placebo use is effective in the treatment of pain as well, however it is common that distress can be part of the cause in that case
as well. Placebo is the Latin term for "I shall please." Because of the connotation of the word throughout time, the term placebo has earned a reputation as something
that is deceptive or less than authentic. It is this concept that causes us to believe that if someone is treated successfully with a placebo that the illness was
all in their head. This is not necessarily true. It has long been shown that placebo treatment is effective in the treatment of angina which is a very
real heart condition. Placebo treatment not only relieves it but in some cases improves results in the electrocardiogram as well. Patients can take advantage of a placebos power by
following some guidelines that have been offered by researchers. It is recommended that a doctor be chosen who is optimistic and communicative. If you have doubts about a
treatment, tell your doctor. It is important that a patient have confidence in the doctor, and it is then more likely the placebo treatment could work. With the
advent of managed health care it is possible the placebo treatment will not be as effective, as the patient-doctor relationship should be a closer one than most managed care plans
