record rates, people are fearful of losing jobs. For most of the 1994 presidential election campaign, a focus was on NAFTA. Ross Perot, with his charts and eccentric tactics,
illustrated that a "giant sucking sound" would be heard as U.S. jobs were filtered into Mexico (Pine, 1997). It is true that the largest and best-funded lobby against NAFTA and
fast track were the trade unions (Lloyd, 1996). That does make sense. After all, the average blue collar worker would be most affected by NAFTA as the opening up of
trade could open the door for greedy shop owners who prefer to pay third world laborers less than the U.S. minimum wage. There has been a lot of criticism on
NAFTA and employment being lost is a major component. Unions are quite powerful today, although not as powerful as the used to be. It is estimated that unions in the
United States include somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 to 15% (Lloyd, 1996) of the U.S. workforce. With the large amount of money they have been able to acquire, they
have utilized their money and power to put pressure on congressmen and senators (1996). While unions were organized long ago to protect the rights of the average worker, globalization
does seem to change things. First, a look at globalizations effects will paint a picture of America that is quite different than it was perhaps half a century ago. When
