It has been asserted
by a growing number of educators that in order to improve the academic standards we must completely abandon the pass/fail grade system that is in place in some facets of
our educational system. It can be definitively asserted that this pass/fail system is, in fact, a recipe for academic disaster. Critics of the current state of our educational
status contend our nation lags far behind others in terms of academic achievement. Canadians are typically over a year ahead of us by the time they reach middle school
and even South Koreans achieve a higher high school graduation rate than do American students (Heldenfels, 2010). Critics of American educational success, or lack thereof, have reason to point
the finger of blame at least partially at the tendency of some educators to gauge student success or failure purely on a pass/fail system.
If students are to excel, they should be given reason to excel. Lumping everyone into the two broad classifications of pass/fail doesnt inspire anyone but the
lower achievers. If we put standards in place that encourage competition then the top students will do just that, compete. One consequence of that competition will be an
