is near Hastings, England ("Piltdown"). Workmen who found the skill took it to a local amateur paleontologist by the name of Charles Dawson (Levine 69). He took it to Arthur Smith Woodward, a prominent paleontologist who worked at Londons British Museum at the time (69). He confirmed that the bones prehistoric significance as well as the new creatures key position in the evolutionary tree and somehow this bridged the "evolutionary gap between ape and man" (69). It had an added significance which is that it went along with Darwins theory and suggested that the "missing link" had been discovered (69). And while that seems to be quite an interesting find, the truth is that it was no find at all. It was deemed a hoax decades later, after much controversy as to its authenticity. Although it is now clearly a hoax, the origin of that hoax remains a mystery. The skull as well as the jawbone had been stained in such a manner as to suggest age, and it was filed as well also in order to simulate age ("Piltdown"). The appearance did seem old. There were also phony tools, designed to look prehistoric and they were placed with the skull ("Piltdown"). The discovery was touted as the missing link and thought to go back to the prehistory of humanity ("Piltdown"). It was not until the 1950s that it was discovered to be a hoax ("Piltdown"). This set up a new argument. Creationists would contend that if physical anthropologists might be hoaxed for such a long time, then why should their ideas about other prehistoric materials be accepted ("Piltdown")?
