Transport Association claims that to resolve the problem, the industry must re-evaluate its qualification and training programs as well as to increase the retirement age to 65 ("Pilot Shortage Looming,"
2007). The goal of IATA is to increase the pool of candidates ("Pilot Shortage Looming," 2007). It seems that the relaying of information in this short but informative piece has
the intent of alerting those in the industry to impending changes. The article attempts to encourage industry insiders to take action now, before the pilot crisis gets out of control.
The idea that there are not going to be enough pilots is detrimental, but the idea that lowering standards perhaps is a possibility that is frightening. Pilots must be held
to a high standard, not made to fly countless hours without enough break time and not made to work past their normal retirement age. Of course, in certain occupations, retirement
age is low due to the strenuous nature of the work. It might be too much for someone over the age of 60 to maintain a pilots job. In a
different trade publication called Regional Aviation News, an anonymous article written in 2007 addresses the same thing. The author concludes: "Still, pilot shortages, training and reduced requirements must be monitored
if the industry is not to return to the bad old days of the 1980s, the last time this issue was widely covered which reduced the confidence of the public
in flying regionals" ("Pilot Shortage Making News," 2007). Another article in a more recent issue of the journal also focuses on the issue but makes the claim that changing the
