October 2000 Introduction Before I start this assignment I am going to tell a story about picking up women, that an older woman told me. Now older
women are coming into their own-or maybe were just getting smarter about listening to what they know. Anyway. I was in school and the art teacher came
into the room to invite us to an art show later in the week. Like I would want to go to an art show. She explained the exhibit
to us, what to look stuff like that. Then she said it is good practice. We looked at her - like practice for what? For
meeting other types of people than the ones that may have influenced you coming here, she says. Did I say I was attending school in prison? I would
not let myself be picked up in a bar she said, but I would consider it at an art exhibit or a bookstore. She had all our attention then.
Look at the odds she said. It is during the day or early evening; there is good lighting; people are sober, and there is a slim possibility that the
person I meet, may have some living brain cells. She got us on that one -but I think I may try her idea. Language I know what a
pick-up line is, but I usually dont think of it that way. The people I hang with will use the word "cruise" or "cruising. It is more like
