would become a book , and then more recently a film directed by Roman Polanski. Polanski, who is perhaps best known as a film director whose wife Sharon Tate was slain by Charles Manson family members, actually has a European background and was a victim of the Holocaust. He too was there, which is perhaps why the adaptation of the book is so well executed. And while the film is nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award, and also has a string of nominations for Best Actor, Best Director and so forth, and the quality of production is not in dispute, its authenticity is. Is this film that has received much praise really an accurate portrayal of the authors memoirs? Would Szpilman be happy with Polanskis version of events? It does appear, at least at first glance, that Polanski makes a painstaking effort to get the film right and incorporate a significant sense that what happens here is real. At least it appears to be a gripping, true life portrait and most accounts and reviews do support the notion that this moving film is mesmerizing. There is often silence during the viewing. Audiences have taken this film seriously. Yet, is it true to the book? When Szpilman took pen to paper, he seemingly did so to relay the events of his life. Realizing that he had survived an extraordinary ordeal, and that there is a market for this, the book tells of the events that he had endured. At the same time, while commercially viable, there is also a sense that the author writes as part of a larger, cathartic experience. It is something that he likely felt he had to do.
