Yet, these are not true physical addictions as what one experiences when consuming too much Valium, Heroin or Cocaine. A true addiction is a physical addiction, one where ones body
craves a particular substance and the mind succumbs to the hunger. One of the hallmarks of addiction is a lack of control. The substance seems to have a power
over an individual. In fact, a critical problem in drug addiction research is to comprehend the difference between controlled and uncontrolled drug use, the latter being a relevant part of
the definition of drug addiction (Ahmed and Koob, 1998). These two different patterns of drug use may be observed in different individuals or they may represent successive stages in the
same people (1998). The transition from drug use to addiction usually involves a gradual process of increased drug intake, and an individuals consumption becomes exaggerated along with continuous exposure to
a drug (1998). Because the increased use of a drug is consistent with a common feature of drug addiction, the study of the factors that govern its development may help
to explain the transition from mere use to addiction (1998). Thus, one can say that while some people have been able to stop drug usage, others do not necessarily have
a predisposition to addiction, but rather are plagued by exposure. Some individuals who abuse drugs for too long a time can progress from a state of mere recreational activity to
