keys down. Similarly, when a basketball star misses a basket, he has done something slightly different. Had an individual thrown the same basket time after time, and if the ball
contains the exact same pressure each time, the outcome should be the same. Yet, most players are not quite that meticulous. Most professionals do get the ball in close to
every time, but when the players are running around on the court, they may aim from a slightly different place, or throw in a different way. While professionals do have
the sport down to a science perhaps, their understanding of the science of basketball can help them in their game. Indeed, the comprehension of the physics of basketball can change
the outcome of even a stellar player. Jones (1995) explains that for basketball players, the most important force in the sport is gravity, and when on the
court, players might launch the ball upward, but gravity pulls in down. Whenever anyone jumps or throws a ball up towards the basket, they are essentially drawing
on the basic laws of physics (1995). Newman coaches basketball at a gym in California and he explains that one way to understand what he calls the "calculus of physics,"
is that one needs to understand how to maximize the size of the basket by opening the arc of the ball (Wood, 1996). He explains that at
ten feet, the basket may look like a straight line, but from eleven feet it looks like an ellipse (1996). One begins to get the picture. The position of the
