troubles people may have overcoming simple every day realities. Most of the society assumes that rules and regulations have taken care of the needs of the handicapped, and thus never
even really consider the problems, aside from perhaps becoming angry that they cannot park in a handicapped parking space to make their walk to the facility a few feet less.
While many governmental buildings and establishments do have regulations involving the type and amount of handicapped access facilities, there are many areas in the country that do not have
strict guidelines and regulations. Colleges and universities around the nation do not necessarily follow one sort of regulation involving the physically challenged individual and they are generally expected to provide
facilities and access according to their own demands. The following paper examines how accessible universities and colleges are in terms of the physically challenged. The paper examines if their needs
are met by first presenting a literature review. The paper then presents two personal experiences involving people in higher education institutions, and then moves on to a detailed look at
what various colleges and universities offer to the physically challenged. The paper ends with a section that discusses what can be done, according to some authors, in relationship to improving
the situations in the country. Literature Review The first article to be examined is one that discusses wheelchair sports in one particular university. "The Bedlam Rivalry in basketball
